What Did Milly Find?

The Blue Ridge Mountains From Mount Jefferson (Photo by Milly Moss)

We spent last week in our Mountain Home.  On Saturday, in soft summer rain, we headed down the mountain to our Florida home.  After chasing a cold front down the Interstate Highway system, we lost it somewhere in Georgia.  Today I am missing the cool mountain air.

Let’s begin with a passage from Isaiah that touched my heart today:

3 You will keep him in perfect peace,

Whose mind is stayed on You,

Because he trusts in You.

4 Trust in the Lord forever,

For in Yah, the Lord, is everlasting strength.

[A part of the Song of Salvation, Isaiah 29:3-4 NKJV]

Last week was a whirlwind.  We filed permits, staked cabin sites, and looked closer at our dreams.  We met great people, and we found a new restaurant.  Let me give you a peek into the part of the country I plan to live.  I will be out in the country and the closest Towns are Jefferson and West Jefferson, North Carolina.

Jefferson is on the north side of Mount Jefferson, and West Jefferson is on the west side of the mountain.  The Town of Jefferson is the Ashe County seat for the entire County.

West Jefferson was a major stop for the Norfolk and Western Railroad, also known as the “Virginia Creeper.”  It is now a tourist destination for the High Country.  I fell in love with this area and these towns’ decades ago.  This trip we found a special place, I want to share with you.

While on this trip I filled my mind with doubts, worries, and tasks.  On Thursday we walked downtown in West Jefferson to find some lunch.  I struggled physically from travel and stress.  I needed to return to eating clean to help manage the pain.

We looked in storefront windows approaching a woman sweeping in front of a store.  She said, “Hello.”  I looked up into a smiling face.  I responded in kind.  The smile was genuine and touched her eyes.  She walked into the storefront.  The exchange was as simple as that.  All the Holy Spirit needs is a simple opening.

Curious I looked inside and realized it was a café.  I spotted the word “healthy” and above the register a sign read “The Farmhouse.”   My husband suggested we check it out.  The menu surprised me; I could eat almost everything on the menu!  That is a big deal for me!

We sat at the table by the window, I tried the ‘Veggie’ and my dear husband had ‘The Hadley,’ tuna on a bagel. Yum! Yes I took a bite of his sandwich! And he had a bite of mine.  The homemade hummus on my sandwich was smooth and delicious.  We also shared a tropical smoothie.  Rejuvenated we headed out to finish our errands.  The best part was… {whisper} No tummy-ache from carbs.

When I turned my mind to God and trusted Him, He led me step by step to a where I could feed my body while He soothed my soul.  I did not have the physical or spiritual strength to do what we did last week.  I knew something special had happened.  Today I learned what it was:  “For in Yah, the Lord, is everlasting strength.”

That night I gave into temptation and ate the wrong stuff.  I admit it.  I woke not feeling well.  When we went into town on Friday, at lunch I didn’t want to eat but knew my blood sugar was too low.  I decided to try one of the protein smoothies.  Back at The Farmhouse we went, I ordered the ‘Miles to Go’ smoothie.  Oh My Goodness!  That settled my stomach and perked me right up.

We laughed at my purple tongue as we drove up to Mount Jefferson State Park and took in the views of Jefferson, West Jefferson, and the Blue Ridge Mountains.  The sun shined between the clouds warming the mountain air.  From our vantage point, the mountains were visible all the way to Virginia and Tennessee.  What a treat, it has been years since I have been able enjoy a summer day outdoors.

If you get to Jefferson and West Jefferson in your travels, check out the downtown has a variety of shops and cafes.  Exploring the side streets, you can find the cheese factory and the honey shop with a real live beehive.  Seek and you may find the gems of a mountain town shopping trip.

If you want to rest your toes with healthy choices, I suggest; trying The Farmhouse for great service, an atmosphere of peace and good healthy food.

If you do stop in to taste delicious fare and to relish the down-home spirit, say “Hi” to Jessica the owner, she was the one with the heartfelt smile, and tell her Milly sent ya!  Enjoy!

P.S.  The week has gotten away from me. It’s Tuesday already! How did that happen?  Thank you for your patience as I figure out the travel and recovery thing.  I hope to be back to the Sunday/Monday routine soon!  Have a blessed week!  Milly
