I have been growing mustard and collards over the winter. While I’ve eaten collard and mustard greens over the years, I had never cooked them myself until recently. These plants flourish in South Florida’s mild winter and sandy soils. It amazed me how large the leaves grew. The mustard greens were even bigger than the collards. When the summer heat started in March. The heat and insects damaged the collards to the point I had to cut them back in April. The mustard plants bolted and sent thick tall stalks reaching for blue skies. This has me hoping for mustard seeds.

Spring or Summer?

The calendar in North America states spring starts in a couple of weeks. South Florida, however, has to be different. First, our “winter” is more like spring than winter. It is like Florida got attached to the Continent to add a bit of the sub-tropics to North America. There are few areas of the United States, that reach as far south as Florida juts into the Atlantic Ocean.

Sowing the Spirit

Planting season is in full swing in South Florida. Using the lessons learned, I am tearing out the old, sowing the seeds, and praying with hope for a harvest. All while keeping up with renovations and learning to sell online. My writing has suffered because of the time constraints. I have learned when it is time to work the land, something has to give.
