Come Back

Milly’s Come Back Mango

How are things going? Sunday was the coldest day of 2022 in South Florida so far. Don’t laugh. It got to 36 degrees Fahrenheit, then climbed to a high of 59 degrees! Okay… laugh with me. I did cover my plants that night. We lost none except the bloom is off the mango! The great thing about trees is they usually come back in the spring, even in South Florida!

Service

Here in America, service projects and giving ramps up at the end of the year. Whether it is the good will of the holidays or the tax write off by the end of the year, there are many opportunities to serve our fellow man. As with everything American, we whip ourselves into an exhausting frenzy with wonderful projects. In the past, these many choices have left me exhausted, sometimes sick, and glad the season was over for another year.

The Ride of My Life

Photo by Aaron Burden on Unsplash

Woosh! Whoa! Slow down. Then we creep along the track straight up in the air. Prepare… Creep… Prepare… creep… tension builds. The last day, we teeter at the top of the track with nothing but clear blue skies in every direction. Ah, Beautiful. It feels like we are floating on air. We can’t see the tracks. Only “blue skies ahead.”

Sow in Tears Reap in Joy

The 4th of July is a day of celebration in America. After a year of restrictions, families could finally pull together to celebrate. Something hangs in the air. Among us regular folks, the celebrations seemed muted after a year of losses. What is this heavy weight in the atmosphere?

A Merry Christmas from Florida

Florida Snow on Christmas Eve 2020 (Photo by Milly)

Yes, the mountain girl went to the beach yesterday, Christmas Eve, and that is Florida ‘snow’ that you see on the water. A cold front moved through SoFlo* this morning. The high yesterday was eighty degrees with winds, cloudy skies and a chance of ‘snow.’ As I write this, the temperature outside is fifty-five degrees. We expect the low tonight to be forty-two degrees. I’d better cover the plants! BRR! {Guffaw!} This is as close to a White Christmas as we get. Can you see the whitecaps on the Atlantic?

Let’s Catch up

Photo by Kelsey Chance on Unsplash

Yes, I am going ‘old school.’ Catching up was a common phrase back in the day. It was a way for friends to get caught up on each other’s lives. I guess today the phrase is, let’s grab a cup of coffee. I remember coffee or tea as an established part of catching up, not the main event. Catching up was all about friends, family and life.

Daniel’s Prayer

Photo by Aaron Burden on Unsplash

Growing up Christian, I learned the same stories over and over. The Red Sea and the escape from Egypt, the Garden of Eden, Jesus walking on the water, and Daniel in the lions’ den were just a few. I heard the stories so much that I thought I knew all about it. What I missed was the adult version of the story.

When We Are Lost

Lost in the Night… (Photo by Milly Moss)

This week my moms found something in the parable of the Lost Son.  Usually, I glaze over when this parable is mentioned.  I cannot count the number of sermons and homilies I have heard on the “Prodigal Son.”  My mom pointed out a four-word phrase that changed my thinking.
